First off, I’m not a doctor or even a medical professional. However, I’m currently in Washington DC attending a conference for the American Academy of Family Physicians to promote Urgent Care Textbooks.
There are over 5,000 doctors attending this conference, so I’ve been talking to doctors non-stop for days.
One of the little benefits of this conference was a free flu shot.
Now I should mention that I’m a wimp and I’m just a little bit scared of needles. I really, really, really hate getting flu shots. I just don’t like needles.
I got flu shots free for years when I worked at NextCare Urgent Care.
It was free and they came to my office, so no excuses.
Since leaving in 2010 I have found reasons to avoid the flu shot each year. I’ve gotten lucky and only gotten the flu one of those three years, but knew that I was playing Russian Rolette.
I probably still would have skipped the free flu shot, but succumbed to peer pressure. Thank goodness for health conscious co-workers.
I’m glad I did, the AAFP was offering a newer type of shot called Fluzone Intradermal which came out in 2011.
The needle is 90% smaller.
There is something awesome about a needle that is only 1/10th of an inch long verses the normal 1½ inch needle. Most importantly the shot is intradermal which means it doesn’t go into the muscle.
Personally I thought it was a lot less painful. Since the needle is shorter, this particular shot doesn’t go into the muscle, which means less soreness the next day.
Now that I know this type of shot is available, I’m going to be a whole lot more willing to get my flu shot in the future. It was so much less traumatic for me.
Since getting the flu shot I’ve conducted an informal survey of the doctors that have come by our booth. Every single doctor I spoke with highly recommends the flu shot.
Every Single One!
Again, I’m not a medical professional, so I’m not going to even try and cover the medical aspects of why you should get a flu shot, but have a list of links below to additional information from very reputable sites.
