Social Media is hard work. It is great for personal use, but when you begin to market a blog everything changes. No longer is your social stream just for fun.
As a small blogger, you are your brand. Everything you do on social media will reflect positively or negatively on your brand.
I’ve read hundreds of articles on social media. Some of the advice is amazing, but most of it just isn’t realistic for small bloggers. We have limited timed and resources and need to find the most bang for our buck.
I recently wrote about why I’m not adding additional platforms to my blogging social media list. I’ve come to realize that social media done effectively can be a very effective marketing tool. However, the opposite is true as well. Poorly done social media can be a real drag on your blog marketing.
Every blogger handles their social media marketing differently. What works for one blogger won’t work for another blogger even if they are in the same niche. The trick is to find social media platforms the works for you and your blog.
I still have a lot to learn but feel that these 17 tips are critical to social media success for small bloggers.
- Focus on one platform till you achieve success and then move on to a new platform. As you learn a platform, automatic limited portions of the process. I personally use Tailwind for Pinterest and Social Jukebox for Facebook and Twitter.
- Platforms are not created equal – in other words – don’t expect the same methods to work across each platform. You can use a lot of the same content but will need to find different ways of highlight the information in your post.
- Share, share, share! If you share other people’s content, most will share yours in turn. People like Adrian Jock (who blogs about internet marketing) and Mitch Mitchell (who blogs about business consulting) are masters at this.
- Find bloggers with similar sized audiences and help them out. See point above.
- Do your research – read articles and follow advice; don’t rush in like a bull in a china shop.
- Look at what other thought leaders in your industry are doing and copy them (in a good way).
- Don’t overdo it – take your time and build slowly.
- Don’t bother chasing the latest fad.
- Social Media is about engagement – talk to people, offer advice and help. This is how I found out about Word Swag one of my favorite graphic programs. Special thanks to Debt Free Guys for this find.
- If you don’t like a platform, don’t waste your time. Your personality shines through when you are having fun with your posts.
- Don’t be afraid to use your personal platforms to promote your blog, if your subject is applicable to your audience. Obviously, this needs to be done tastefully and infrequently.
- Be Real! Your blog is a reflection of who you are, so let people know the real you.
- Graphics are critical to success – Use programs like Canva and Wordswag to create engaging graphics.
- Check out this resource from Hello Nature that lists 21 resources for free pictures.
- Use your time wisely. Don’t get so caught up in your feed that you forget to do your job.
- Learn about hashtags and use them wisely based on your content.
- Unless you are a political or religious writer stay away from controversial subjects. I make it a rule to only post positive, uplifting stuff.
- Don’t bother trying to buy followers or pad your numbers. The numbers don’t matter if people don’t engage with your content. Check out this guest post I wrote for Doug Sandler – Why Engagement Matters on Social Media.
